When Captain Cook and his crew sailed to Polynesia in 1769 many of the mariners were intrigued by the tattoos they saw displayed on the natives. Deciding to take part in the process themselves, the sailors returned back west wearing tattoos of their own, helping to coin the term “tattoo”, and sparking a widespread interest in the art form.

These days recorded music is everywhere. Streaming over our phones, our computers, our MP3 players, Pandora, Soundcloud, YouTube, satellite radio – it seems to be coming out of the very air we breathe. There are even “retro” forms in revival, like vinyl and cassettes.

It’s hard to imagine the days when, if you wanted to hear music, you had to make it yourself or know somebody else who did. From then there were several steps – and some interesting detours – to the recording and distribution technology we have today.

Back in 1877 (patents in 1878), Thomas Edison used two needles on tinfoil cylinders. One needle was for recording and the other for playback. This was the creation of the phonograph. The first words he recorded were “Mary had a little lamb”.

Get Physical Party at T.R.A.C.S 2

Last Saturday we had the “Get Physical Party”. There were more guests than we expected and that was wonderful. DJ Threesje had made a nice set with music in theme. As always, I made some snapshots. It took a long time for textures to get sharp. I blamed Linden Lab for that. Only later did I see that my draw distance was way too high. I'll be more careful next time.

 When Olivia Newton-John recorded her 11th studio album, Physical, 40 years ago, she sang “There's nothing left to talk about, unless it's horizontally.” It’s perhaps a tame lyric by 2021 standards, but it was downright scandalous when it was released on Sept. 28, 1981.

Almost lost the few picture I made during the party but gladly I could restore them. Not much people came but we had good time with the music set DJ Threesje had made.
